From “just looking” to joining the team:
how to get a job at BNZ in 6 easy steps

1. Profiling and applying online

Step one is to profile yourself. Even if you don't see a postion that interests you right away, entering your contact details and
indicating your areas of interest means we can keep you updated with suitable opportunities.

Once you've found a job that looks like you, applying online for the job is quick and easy.

Attach your CV and covering letter to your application. Your CV is your opportunity to tell us about yourself. A CV should have dates
and details of your work experience and an outline of what you did in your previous roles.

You'll then be asked to complete an online assessment. This will give us an idea of how suited you are to the role you
have applied for.

2. Getting ready for the interview

We want you to leave your interview feeling you've given us the best possible picture of who you really are. That way, we stand the
greatest chance of matching you to your ideal spot on the BNZ team.

You can't really study for an interview - it's not a test! But you can spend some time thinking about the kinds of questions we might
ask and how you might answer them.

Remember, the main things we'll be interested in are the skills, and "competencies" that relate to the role you're applying for.
Read back over the ad for the job you applied for - most of them will be listed in there.

At the interview, be prepared to think outside the square with your answers. Sometimes something you've done in your social life,
family life or for a sports team or volunteer group can be a great way to show a competency in action.

3. The interview itself

The interview is our chance to find out a bit more about you, what your strengths are and why you want to join our team. It's also
a good opportunity for you to find out more about us. So as well as being prepared to answer questions, make sure you bring
a few of your own!

What kind of questions can you expect? Some of them will be "competency based". If, for example, you say in your CV that you're
organised, we might ask you for an example of when that has helped you in a previous role, and what the result of that was.

You can also expect a few questions about what kind of work environment you enjoy and what you want from your career.

Please make sure you bring your signed Application Form to the interview.

4. Question time

Interview questions aren't an interrogation - they're our chance to bring information from your CV and application to life,
and a great opportunity for you to tell us more about yourself and your background. Like anything, there's a skill to answering
questions well. If using a structure helps you remember things, you could try using the "STAR" format:

ST: situation/task - what you were faced with

A: action - what you did to tackle the problem

R: result - what happened as a result of your actions

5. A great interview

  • Think of at least one example to illustrate each role competency
  • Be specific and detailed in your answers
  • Use examples from previous jobs where possible, but include examples from volunteer work, school, hobbies
and other parts of your life if they're relevant
  • Use recent examples from the past 2 years where possible
  • Spend most of your time describing what you did when faced with challenges - the "A" part of STAR
  • "Tune in" to the interviewer. If they are probing for more detail, give it. If they are hurrying you along, give briefer responses
  • Take your time. It's OK to spend a moment thinking of an example before you start talking
  • If you don't understand one of our questions, say so, and we'll try to explain it differently
  • Do your homework. Spend time researching the BNZ, business unit and role.
If you want to know more, bring some questions of your own

6. After the interview

If we feel you may be right for the role, we'll move on to reference checking and credit checks (we're a bank, after all!).

If this all goes well, we'll offer you the job. Once you accept we'll agree on a starting date and your BNZ career will be under way!

Of course, your first job at BNZ is just a starting point. One of the things people say they love about working here is how everyone's
career is treated differently. (We call it "5000 ways to be better off".) That means your next step will be based on what you want from
your work and personal life.
